Lillian Wilheim Smith. (1882-1971) Late afternoon, Superstition Mountain, near Phoenix Arizona. Zane Grey's cousin.
She came to Arizona to illustrate Grey's "The Rainbow Trail". "Smith studied at the National Academy and the Art Students League, NYC. She was the wife of a prominent Indian guide and volunteered as an art teacher for Navajo and Hopi children. Know primarily as a watercolorist, this is one of her rare oils." Verso also includes two notes describing the scene and legend of the mountain.
On the back: "Late Afternoon. The allure of mysterious Superstition Mountain has been told in legend and history. Apache and Pima Indians revere and fear its strange formations and deep fastnesses. Gold has been found there, and the "Lost Dutchman" Mine is the most famous of its lost locations. The slopes of Superstitions are a garden of strange and wonderful cactus and desert growth. In spring, the soft colors of the Palo Verde blooms, yellow flowers of prickley pear, ocotillo and lavender iron wood forms a complete foreground."

Barron Postmus. The Superstitions.
"These grand sentinels stand to the east of Phoenix, Arizona guarding the secrets of the lost Dutchman Mine and other mysteries and fables that have grown up around this magical area of western folklore. Their very size and rugged shapes seem to create their own mystery..." Barron Postmus
"A native Californian, Barron Postmus "The Cloud Man" spent several years in Hawaii before returning to school at the Los Angeles Art Center. A brief stint in the Army took him to Europe where he served as an illustrator. After the service, he was hired as a technical illustrator by a large aerospace firm. The next few years saw him promoted rapidly to graphic designer, and in 1968 Barron opened his own graphic and illustration agency. Even then he was working for the day when oil painting would be his total profession, and in 1985 this became a reality. The results of this efforts can be seen today at galleries in Scottsdalle, Carmel, and Canon Beach as well as in private corporate collections including Infonet of El Segundo, the Sears Tower in Chicago and in the VIP lounge of the new Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas.
